Did You Know That Diabetes Has Reached Epidemic Proportions In The United States And It Is Only A Matter Of Time Before You Or Someone You Love Is Affected?
Hi, I’m Donna and I’m on a mission to inform and educate the people in my world about Diabetes.
I’m going to show you that you are in control of your metabolic disease, and I am going to give you the tools you need to find your better health.
I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 49. My hemoglobin A1C was 10.5. Normal is between 4.5 and 6.5. My blood sugars were so high that my doctor immediately wanted to put me on insulin, but I resisted. I was given prescriptions for oral diabetes management, and for high blood pressure and high cholesterol control, the dreaded circle of three that is the hallmark of metabolic disease. I was referred to a nutritionist who provided me with a glucometer and a picture of a food pyramid that showed almost 50% of my caloric intake everyday should be made of refined carbohydrates. She also provided me with a huge packet of information from pharmaceutical companies who were brimming with advice on management of my diabetes. (I’ll let you guess what their solutions were.)
That was almost four years ago. It was no great surprise to me that I would one day be a diabetic. The great surprise was that it happened to me before I was 50 years old.
My mother died at age 59 after multiple battles with almost every major system disease that you can think of, finally succumbing to the effects of chemotherapy after having been diagnosed with breast cancer. I believe the real underlying cause of her very untimely death was uncontrolled diabetes. My mother was battling so many health issues that she was forced to pick the most immediate concerns every day, and diabetes was not an acute disease that was interfering with her daily activities.
Fortunately, there are many more tools available today to people who want to learn than there were when my mother was alive. Some of them are well-researched, articulate, and useful. Others are little more than snake-oil disguised as a physician-approved treatment for your disease.
Let me tell you what this blog is not going to provide:
- A bunch of click-bait ads at the bottom and in the margins of every article
- Ridiculous and un-verifiable home-remedy stories
- Articles authored by people who don’t have or don’t understand diabetes
- Lectures and judgments about your disease
What you will find is informative, healthy, interesting, entertaining, and timely material for you and your family while you recover from this disease. You deserve to know the stories of real people, just like you, who win every day. You’ll see stories of triumph, stories of humor, of drama, stories of balance and control, and even the often cold and harsh realities of living with this disease.
You’ll find relevant articles, sound advice from experts and people living with diabetes, a solid research source, and even a community to share your own travels, if you so desire. You’ll find recipes to give and to take, and friends to make, too.
Whether you were just diagnosed with diabetes, or have fought it for years, I want you to know that you do not have to be driven by your disease. This is not the end for you. There are very real steps that you can take starting today to control your life and stop diabetes.
I want you to see that there is hope in every day and room for all the dreams you have in your heart in spite of this damn disease.
Intellectually, I understand that I am not going to meet my end the same way as my mother. But emotionally? Emotionally, that thought scares me half to death. It would be nice to know there are friends who will walk with me and to learn with me.
Please join me. I’m happy to have someone with me on this journey. Let’s find our better health together.
